Learn More about Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)

Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) offers a mechanism for forwarding the packets for any type of network protocol. It was developed in the late 1990s to give quicker packet forwarding for IP routers. MPLS abilities have expanded massively since then to support traffic engineering, service creation (VPNs), network convergence. It basically makes use of IP addresses that can be either IPv4 or IPv6 for identifying the end points and intermediate switches and routers. It also integrates with traditional IP networks easily. Working of MPLS & Global MPLS

MPLS

MPLS basically works by tagging the traffic that comes with an identifier or a label to differentiate the LSPs. The router uses this label to determine the LSPs whenever a packet is received. After that, it searches the LSP in its forwarding table to identify the best link on which packet will be forwarded and also identify the label that will be used in the next hop.

Various types of labels are used for each hop and these labels are selected by the switch or router that performs the forwarding operations. It also enables the use of simple and quick forwarding engines that are often implemented in hardware.

The ingress router that is located at the edge of the MPLS network categorizes each packet by a varied range of attributes.  This attributes help in identifying the LSP that will be used. MPLS only make use of LSP labels to forward the packets to the egress router.

Global MPLS

Global MPLS is also very similar to MPLS . But the explicit label is basically used to differentiate the LSP at each LSR in Global MPLS . The most common schemes used in Global MPLS are

  • Utilization of timeslot to determine the LSP, on a Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) link
  • Make use of fiber or port on which a packet is received
  • Using of wavelength to recognize the LSP, on a Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM) link

Benefits of MPLS services

MPLS IP

Cost Savings

According to some stats, MPLS-based services can reduce the costs by 10% to 25% over comparable data services, and it totally depends on upon the specific mix of applications, and network configuration. It can add video and voice traffic so that cost savings can also rise to as much as 40% network wide.

Outsourced Routing

Through MPLS, carrier handles WAN routing that means companies can hire less WAN/router engineers on staff. With MPLS, you don’t have to manage a large routed network.

QOS Enablement

The main benefit of MPLS-based services is that it has the capability to support QoS, which is mainly responsible for rolling out video and voice.

Any-to-any connectivity

With MPLS, you can easily interlink sites to handle all kinds of traffic patterns. Applications such as video and voice that features the any-to-any traffic patterns can also be easily managed.

Disaster Recovery

MPLS-based services help in enhancing the disaster recovery in varied ways. Some key sites and data centers can be easily connected in multiple ways to the cloud with MPLS. Also, the remote sites can be effortlessly reconnected to backup locations if required. It offers flexibility for business recovery.

Improved Performance

Network designers can lessen the number of “hops” between network points with MPLS services as because of its any-to-any nature.  This helps in improving the response time and application performance.

The Bottom Line

The main benefits of MPLS basically include the interlinking of data centers to the branch office, or sometimes from branches to each other. So ,if you are planning to take global MPLS services then choose a trustworthy company to avail global MPLS services.
